With my senior year starting soon and my last football season already under way, I am officially scared to death of the future. I’m sure most upcoming seniors feel the same way as I do, but I am also just trying to enjoy a lot of the things that I won’t be able to do much longer.
On Monday, we started our last set of two-a-days. Oh boy, two-a-days. Also known as the worst few weeks of football practice. But, this year was different for me and a lot of my senior teammates.
We were excited for practice twice a day and I think the main reason is because we won’t ever get to do it again. I know my friends and I have talked about senior year ever since we were little kids playing two-hand touch football at Kearney High football games. Finally, we’ll all get to be on the same field again playing for the varsity team.
The seniors and all of my teammates are honored to get to play for Coach Brandon Cool. We recognize that wearing the blue Bearcat paw on the side of your helmet is not something that should be taken for granted.
I know the reason I’ve had success — and our team has had success on the football field — is because of our coaches. Coach Cool and Coach Wink helped me learn the offense and put me in a position to be successful last year.
But, the best thing about them is that they would do anything for any kid on the team, whether it’s the starting quarterback or a guy that never steps onto the field. It is also easy to be successful when you’re surrounded by amazing teammates that work as hard as they do.
When I was a freshman, I was planning on playing football for one season, but I didn’t know if I would play after that. I thought about just focusing on basketball. Being on the team changed that.
After freshman football and being around the program, I knew I wanted to keep playing. Now as a senior, it’s hard for me to understand kids who don’t want to play football. There is truly nothing like running onto Foster Field as a Bearcat and I have had the time of my life doing it.
I am excited to see all of our hard work show this fall, I understand this year is going to be a blast and it will fly by in a hurry, but I can say for myself and my teammates that there is absolutely nothing better than being a Bearcat.
