IN FRONT OF THE WATER TOWER, AURORA — Expectations sure are high for the Aurora Husky football team, particularly their offense.

Just ask the athletic trainer.

“Bogging down a little bit,” Jordan Stithem said when Husky head coach Kyle Peterson called a timeout with 6:30 left in the first half and Aurora facing a fourth-and-2 from the Wahoo 30 on Friday night.

At the time, the Class C-1, top-ranked Huskies were on their sixth offensive possession and had scored four times already. The final score would be 55-21 over the third-ranked Warriors.

After the timeout, record-setting quarterback Baylor Scheierman hit Jordan Stevenson for 7 yards to extend the drive, then on the next play he found Stevenson down the right sideline for a score and a 34-14 lead.

“Bullets,” Scheierman said as he left the field after his fifth touchdown pass of the night. It had taken not quite 18 minutes to rack up 346 yards passing on a defense that had only given up 19 points in their first two games.

Here is what we know:

Scheierman and this Husky offense is not a one-man band of characters. Sure, he’s averaging 405 yards passing per game through three games — the Class C-1 record is 270.7. He has three of the top-10 receivers in 11-man football: Cy Bullerman, Jordan Stevenson and Cade Reichardt.

“Our line just does an awesome job,” Stevenson said after the game on Friday. “Nothing we do is a one man thing. Baylor does a great job of extending plays and as a receiver you just try to work back toward him. He does a great job of getting us the ball.”

Peterson has been an offensive mastermind for a few seasons, he’s in his fourth as the head coach at Aurora, but was a long-time assistant for former coach Randy Huebert. He knows the chemistry with this group is pretty special.

“He has a great relationship with his receivers,” Peterson said. “They work together well. And he applies his basketball knowledge really well. He understands spacing.

“He throws people open you could say. He throws really well to spots and kids run to those spots. The kids just work really hard, especially on broken plays. They work hard to come back to the ball, to cut across the field and to go long at times. We have rules on scramble drill and they work at it hard because a big play could be coming at any time.”

After three weeks, Class C-1 is down to 10 unbeaten teams and the Huskies lead the point standings. Each team they have beaten is 2-1 — you could argue all may be top-10 teams — and Aurora’s average margin of victory is 37 points.

Wahoo coach Chad Fox kind of just tipped his cap and scratched his head.

“They have a lot of weapons,” he said. “And (Scheierman) makes the whole thing go. He’s really, really good. Really good. They have some excellent skill players and that makes it really hard to defend. They executed at a very high level.”

Sometimes tipping your hat is all you can do.

“Hats off to them,” Fox said. “They are very, very good.”

Let’s Rewind

Millard West put themselves right back in the picture in the top of Class A with a big Thursday night 28-14 win over defending champion Omaha North. A pair of touchdown receptions from Dalys Beanum and a pair of runs from Jackson Wright did the trick.

In Class B, No. 3 McCook laid their claim back to the top of the class with a 20-13 win over top-ranked York. The Bison forced three Duke turnovers to help end their 14-game winning streak. Now, the Dukes face second-ranked Omaha Skutt this Friday.

A pair of Striv runners lead the MaxPreps rankings in the state and you’d do well to figure out a way to watch them before the fall is over. Johnson County Central senior Josh Bailey is off to a 628 yards start in three games and Mullen’s Lane Edis is trying to do him one better at 764 yards in the 8-man ranks. Edis’ 254.7 yards per game average leads the nation for players with at least three games played.
