Three long days of tryouts resulted in six junior varsity cuts, no varsity cuts, and many excited players.

The 2015 varsity team maxed out at fifteen players. During the girls’ basketball first match away from home, the Wildcats just edged out Kearney 50-47 on Friday, December 6th.

Marc Kruger is starting his first year as head coach at Millard West. He taught at Bellevue West and has been coaching girls’ basketball for fourteen years. Kruger had his chance to go up against his old team this past Saturday.

The girls kept their winning streak alive with another victory over Bellevue West, 69-63 in overtime to go 2-0 on the season so far.

Forward Alex Hruby had only good things to say about his training techniques.

Despite the various injuries plaguing the team, the Wildcats have started out 2-0 on the season. Their next game is tonight against Omaha South, who defeated Bryan 76-27. Photo by Corey Hadfield.

“[The] season’s going to go well with him [Kruger],” Hruby said.

The varsity team has been practicing five times a week for two hours daily. Kruger explained the intensity would decrease now that the season is underway.

Both Kruger and Hruby agreed Fremont is one of the team’s biggest competitors this year because of their great players.

“We want to make it as far as we did last year [in the state tournament]” Hruby said.

With hard work, better defense and good communication on the court, Kruger expects to go far in the state competition.

“I have really high expectations this year for the girls,” Kruger added.

Catch the Wildcat’s next game Thursday, December 11th at Omaha South (1-1), tip off at 5:30 pm.
